Who Are the Wrapping Writers?

We work here, in various departments and capacities; and until the blog started, little did we know we were writers. But here we gather together, your humble scribes; and with a deep bow and a flourish of the hand, we introduce ourselves:

Scott Frederick
President of Sales & Business Operations

Author of Scott's Two Cents

Scott Frederick captains the good ship CARSON, leading the way to continued growth. Deep of thought and creative, he’s the definition of “entrepreneur.”

Scott describes his function at CARSON by stating, “as President of Business Operations, I am responsible for ensuring that CARSON operates as efficiently and cost effectively as possible, without sacrificing quality as we grow our customer base.”

In the realm of job satisfaction Scott seems to most enjoy the big picture. “Sharing our goals, working to achieve them in a positive manner and then sharing that success with our team.”

One of the big reasons CARSON is such a great place to work and the employees enjoy a very “family” type of atmosphere, is because Scott is a very strong family man. When asked about the most special people in his life, Scott replied, “My family for certain. Sharon and I get a tremendous amount of joy just being with our daughters. As far as a perfect weekend goes, it would simply be doing nothing or anything with my wife and daughters.” Scott and Sharon both are very devoted to each other, their children and extended families. This creates a very secure and unifying atmosphere that extends well into the company itself.

Scott explains his basic philosophy in business and life. “I am motivated most by the things in life that are simple. People spend a great deal of time making life much more difficult than it needs to be. Take care of the basics, and the rest comes much easier. The more superficial you make it by running from the simple truths in life, well, the more difficult it gets. I try to see both the forest and the trees, not just one or the other.”

He wraps it up by mentioning a favorite book that speaks to the basic postulations of life, and these notions are apparent in the way he runs CARSON. “One of my favorite books is All I Ever Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten by Robert Fulghum. The message is so simple and really gets to the core of living.” I suggest it as a good read for anyone.

Sharon Frederick
President of Marketing & Creative Services

Author of Creativity At Work

Sharon Frederick is the co-owner of CARSON. Wife of our Fearless Leader and in of herself an adroit and savvy leader in her own right; she guides us with her natural balance of heart, humor and wisdom. As she is an easy and open conversationalist, I expect some good information for the interview.

When she explains that she coordinates marketing and creative services, we ask if one might say she brings order to chaos? She laughs. “Some would say I create chaos. I do a lot of little things and am involved in coordination between my departments and the others here. I’m also Scott’s speech writer… well, I write the outlines and he wings it from there.”

Like any good captain, her greatest job satisfaction comes from seeing her people get excited over success in their own jobs. “Watching the people around me when they get excited about something we’re doing, whether it is a big casino order from a marketing piece we worked so hard on, or when a wrapper a designer just developed is purchased, or Carol getting excited about a Spanish order, or Gail being right.” (You have to
know Gail) “Seeing others excited about their job, that is the best reward.”

The entire Frederick family is known here at CARSON. Of primary importance to Sharon are her husband and their two smart and sprightly middle-school age daughters, Ellis and Chase. “Scott is always the most important person to me. He’s my life partner. And of course our two daughters Ellis and Chase; the sun rises and sets on them.”

Taking on the responsibilities of running a business has changed the ways Sharon prefers to spend her weekends. “Now my ideal weekend is to do nothing. That means being with Scott and my girls, reading books and some type of sedate personal enrichment be it yoga, a day at the spa. I like much more of a relaxing weekend.”

But she does have a dream vacation she hopes to experience sometime. “I have a strong desire to go on Safari in Africa. I’m enthralled with the whole animal kingdom and the culture in Africa. The giraffes and elephants running wild, it’s fun, it’s cool. I’m fascinated by the thought.”

Knowing this family the way we do, one day she’ll
live that dream!

Michelle Beal
Vice President of Sales

Author of Customer Showcase

Michelle Beal is a unique personality. If one says she is driven, competent and energetic, one would be correct. She’s also a fun and caring person, creating a productive but good- humored environment in her department.

Michelle’s title is vice president of sales. She works with our corporate customer base and manages our customer service center, and she’s also our human resource representative

Michelle enjoys the daily unpredictability of her job.
“I think the best part is that you come to work every day and you never know exactly what’s going to happen. There could be a lot of small orders or there could be a giant order for 30,000 bars. The best part is that somebody is always celebrating, and we get to help them.”

She also finds the atmosphere at CARSON very rewarding. “I genuinely like everybody here, so it’s like you’re coming to see friends. It’s fun to be part of a team and know that you can get basically anything done in a day, no matter what it might be. And you get to work with people you respect and care about.”

Michelle is a very family oriented woman, and everyone here knows her parents Mike and Sandy, and her husband Andy. But of particular note is her 3 year old son Spencer. When this bright-eyed youngster comes to visit he has a cheery hello and hug for everyone; and he always says something unexpected and comical. Spencer enjoys a near celebrity status here at CARSON.

A sun worshipper by nature, Michelle always sports a gorgeous tan in the summer. Once we hear how her favorite weekends are spent, we aren’t surprised. “My ideal weekend is floating on a raft in the sun, enjoying Corona with my family and friends. That’s how I spend most weekends at my parents’ house, on a raft on the lake. As long as my house is clean… then I can relax.”

In more ambitious moments she will talk about a dream adventure a little less relaxing. “I’ve always wanted to go on an African safari and see animals in their natural habitat.
I love animals.”

When left to her, Michelle sums herself up best in her own words. “I am by nature a social person, a fun person who likes to laugh and have a good time and I think that’s why I like working here so much. Fun product, fun environment, we develop friendships outside of work. It’s easy to come to work. You can work hard and do a good job when you like the people. Sometimes I think
I would like be a paramedic; there would be a lot of excitement in that job. But you hate to rock the boat when you’re
already happy.”

We couldn’t agree with her more.

Dianne Beeson
Marketing Associate

Author of Facts & Features

Dianne Beeson has a warm, generous spirit. Her friendly nature allows her to easily transition between production, the customer care center and marketing. Well-mannered and gracious, Dianne’s talents are hidden within the written word.

By day, Dianne works as a copy-writer in the Marketing department. With a flourish of a pen, she adds spark to our email newsletter, effectively describes our wrapper designs on our website, or may provide the punch to a catalog spread. On evenings and weekends, she responds to customer email and processes internet orders. Having direct contact with our customers, Dianne is the customer advocate in many Marketing meetings.

When asked to describe what she likes best about her job at CARSON wrappedhersheys.com, Dianne exclaims, “The people! I genuinely like every person here. There’s a very positive energy here; the synchronicity is awesome. Plus, I get paid to do what I love most: writing. Great people + fun job = happy me.”

Dianne’s best friends are lifelong connections. “I’m super close to my mother and 4 sisters. And I have a small handful of long time friends, most of who live out west, as I lived in Tucson for many years as a young adult. We stay in pretty close contact, visit regularly and take trips together.” But everyone knows that Dianne’s pride and joy is her son, Joe Max. Dianne states, “My son Joe Max is number 1. He’s away in the Air Force now. I sure do miss him.”

A medieval history buff, Dianne describes her dream vacation as, “a massive castle escapade around the British Isles, spending months exploring all manner of castle, be they pristine or in ruins. And at night I would stay in castles reputed to be soundly haunted.” Certainly she would drag a friend or two along. We can’t wait to read the book about this adventure!

Bob Jeffries
Shipping & Receiving Associate

Author of Where We Ship

Affable but private, introspective but good-natured, Bob Jeffries is a bit of a walking enigma to some of us around CARSON. Intelligence is apparent by his dry wit, and loyalty is evidenced
by his beloved status among his coworkers.

On the job Bob is competent and thorough. He’s in charge of shipping and receiving here at CARSON. When asked what he
likes best about his job, he answers unhesitatingly, “The people
I work with. We’re a close knit group that’s more like a family. It’s a fun atmosphere.”

Unmarried, Bob is closest to his immediate family which includes his brothers, sister and parents. Outside of that are several circles of good friends.

Enjoying the adventurous and impulsive inclinations of his age and unencumbered status, Bob describes an ideal holiday. “A great holiday would be me and my friends leaving without a plan and getting into crazy adventures with no destination, no time limit.”

When discussing a perfect weekend, his adventurous spirit is
still apparent.“A perfect weekend would be Friday and Saturday night in Las Vegas, no sleep...then Sunday in the wilderness.”

This abrupt juxtaposition in forms of entertainment prompted further questioning about his camping hobby. “Yes, I do have a tent and all sorts of camping gear. I like to be out in the woods, pretty much all weather but winter. I like to go out to Brookville or Miami Whitewater. I camp with friends.” Every now and then, a man just has to relax!

Whether he’s blasting off for a long Vegas weekend, or putting
us all to shame at a company bowling tournament, the bottom line about Bob is simple: CARSON is that much better because
he is here.

Pam Bottles
Marketing Assistant

Author of FunShine Fun

Pam Bottles is blessed with a confident, open, breezy manner… and the most beautiful hair color any woman could want. People are naturally drawn to her amiable personality, making her a very popular personality around CARSON wrappedhersheys.com. She’s also very talented and capable in her job as marketing assistant and company photographer. Although her degree is in photography, she sought a career that encompassed more that just taking pictures. “I wanted to combine photography with marketing/ advertising. It’s a much more interesting path. I like having the broad range of projects to work on that this job provides. But the best part of my job is the people. Everyone is so enthusiastic, and the environment has an effect on how you do your job. We have a great group here.”

As an only child, she has strong ties to her parents and the family dog Mindy; and her extended family and friends also figures prominently in her life. “I’m very lucky to have the wonderful family that I do have. I’m very close to my extended family. I saw my cousins on a daily basis growing up. Most of my friends are scattered across the country, but then some have re-located to this area.”

When asked what part of the world she’d most like to visit, she hits points all over the globe. “I love experiencing other cultures. I’d love to go to Africa, Greece, and Australia. I’ve had friends who have studied over in Australia and then one of my Aunts recently took a trip there.”

Her main hobby, though, is rowing. “I’ve just joined the Greater Dayton Rowing team. I rowed back in high school. I can remember one regatta in West Virginia where our team took it over. I can’t even explain the experience when you’re out there rowing on the water. I enjoy regattas; they have such a great atmosphere to them. You also meet people from all over the country, it’s interesting to see how far people have come.”

She has certainly rowed her way into our hearts!

Carola Stiver
CP Administrator/Bilingual Service Rep

Author of Puntos de Vista, Español
& Spanish Perspective

Carola Stiver, a petite dark haired woman from Costa Rica, has an open, candid manner that is at once endearing, often surprising, and always amusing.

She has a rather varied list of responsibilities, including receiving the customer photographs, sending proofs and creating Excel reports. But her primary duty is to our Spanish speaking customers. With her help, we’ve done a lot of work on our website in an effort to make it friendlier and more easily accessible to this group. “I get very excited every time we get another Spanish order on the website!” she exclaims happily, “We’re getting busier since we’ve added these improvements to our website.”

She’s the first to tell you how much she enjoys all the people she works with. But there was some apprehension on her part in the beginning. “I am the only Spanish speaking person here and I was scared at first that I might not be accepted because I’m not American. Everyone has been extremely welcoming. I really love everybody here.” The feeling is quite mutual.

As her entire family is in Costa Rica, her husband Aaron and his family lovingly fill that role for her here in the states. Strong ties still exist with her family back home. Fortunately, with all the new technology she can visit with them face-to-face several times a week with the use of computers and webcams.

Carol is an avid dog lover and if she could lead her dream life, she would run an animal shelter. “I love animals, dogs especially. I would dedicate my life to caring for them. A dog is always there for you. No matter what, your dog will always love you.” She tells of her 3 dogs still living with her family in Costa Rica, which she supports fully. “My family takes care of them, but I pay for all their upkeep.”

When it comes to adventure and travel, she admits to being a homebody for the most part. She laughed when she told us,
“I’m kind of a boring person. I like to stay home and relax on the weekend, wake up late, stay in PJ’s all day. I think that’s one of the things I really enjoy.” As for travel, her favorite destination
is home to Costa Rica. “Every time the plane touches the ground there, I’m so excited, my heart beats real fast. I love going
home again.”

We’re just glad she always comes back!
