As you can imagine, the holiday season here at CARSON wrappedhersheys.com is incredibly hectic. Many hours are spent by all back in our production warehouse filling tins and boxes with Hershey's candies, packing holiday gifts and checking that all orders are shipped to you by Christmas.

Working in the production warehouse always puts me in the holiday mood mainly because of the Christmas music marathon we constantly have playing. Every song puts a smile on my face and brings joy to my heart whether it be the Christmas classics like Bing Crosby's I'll Be Home for Christmas or Judy Garland's Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, or modern day hits like Mariah Carey's All I want for Christmas is You or Bruce Springstein's Santa Claus is Coming to Town. There is, however, one song in particular that always has me singing out loud and shaking my hips (no matter how embarrassing this may be).

Feliz Navidad by José Feliciano is, without a doubt, my favorite Christmas song of all time. Written in 1970 by  the blind singer from Puerto Rico, Feliz Navidad has made its way into the hearts of millions as one of the most played and most downloaded songs of the season. The song was even recognized by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers as one of the 25 most played Christmas songs in the world.

Maybe it's the funky beat, catchy lyrics or my love for Spanish culture but nothing puts me in the Christmas spirit more than this fabulously fun song. Sing it with me now... Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad Prospero Año y Felicdad...

A Spanish-American Thanksgiving

My friend Robin has lived in Madrid, Spain for the past five years. The holidays are always hard for her to be away from her family but Thanksgiving is one that she misses the most. Her first Thanksgiving abroad was really depressing and after a long day she decided that she would never spend another Thanksgiving alone again.

The following year she invited all her friends in Madrid to an extravagant Thanksgiving feast at her apartment. She cooked for two days, making all the traditional Thanksgiving dishes. Everyone had a blast. They spent all day eating, drinking wine and appreciating the company of good friends. Robin said that it almost felt like Thanksgiving at home.

Each year Robin's Thanksgiving gets bigger and bigger. Friends eventually started to bring their own unique dishes to her Thanksgiving to create a sort of Spanish-American Thanksgiving. "You wouldn't think to associate paella, croquetas or gazpacho with Thanksgiving but they have become a tradition for us. And, no matter what everyone brings we always have turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie."

On her agenda this year? Her biggest Spanish American Thanksgiving yet; she will be hosting 20 guests in her tiny apartment in Madrid. "It's going to be tight but it is very much worth it. To me Thanksgiving is about being thankful for family and friends and I think that is something all cultures can celebrate. Even though I don't get to be with my immediate family for the holiday, I've created my own little family here. One year I may even try to order chocolate bars from CARSON wrappedhersheys.com to hand out to all my guests!"

Quinceañera…a sweet moment to remember!

In July, we launched a new category of personalized designs in the Spanish section: Quinceañera. We created beautiful designs that are perfect for this special occasion (the day when you dress up like a princess and celebrate your 15th birthday). Our Personalized favors are a unique way to say thank you to all your family and friends for being a part of your dream day that became a reality.

A Lifetime of Love: 86th Wedding Anniversary

This week we received an order for a 70th Wedding Anniversary! This is the biggest number I have seen for an anniversary wrapper design. I couldn’t help but to wonder who in the world is the couple that has been married the longest time?

Searching the internet, I found out that the Guinness record for the longest marriage alive is held by Herbert & Zelmyra Fisher from North Carolina. They will celebrate their 86th wedding anniversary on May 13th, 2010. They are 105 & 103 years of age. Last Valentine’s day, they gave marriage advice through Twitter. They were asked, “What is the best advice they ever received?” Their answer was, “Respect, support, & communication with each other. Be faithful, honest, & true. Love each other with ALL of your heart." They also said that there are no secrets in their marriage, and “Remember, marriage is not a contest – never keep a score. God has put the two of you together on the same team to win.”

To my own surprise, I found many other couples who enjoyed 80 or more years of happy marriage. One of these couples (who have since passed) were Percy & Florence Arrowsmith from Hereford, England. In an article published in 2005 by SeniorJournal.com Percy said the secret to his long marriage was “Yes Dear”. They told the magazine that the key to their long marriage is not to go to sleep on an argument and always kiss each other and hold hands each night before going to bed.

It is refreshing to my soul to read stories like these. Stories that put a smile on your face and are real proof that love is the only thing you need to be happy in life.

In response to the great quantity of orders we have received, we are working on expanding our Spanish wrappers collection. Have a Woof Woofderful Christmas!

Christmas is almost here! … Time to share time with family and friends, and to remind them how much they mean to you. Our personalized candy bars are the best Christmas card. You can write a personal message and even add a picture. My favorite ones are those where people put their pet’s picture on the wrapper. I am a dog lover. They are part of the family and they love you unconditionally. Every time I see the candy bars with a dog on it, I can’t help but to smile and think of all the people that will also smile when they see it.

I believe that if a dog barks to you on this Holiday season, they are telling you “Have a Woof Woofderful Christmas!”

Jimmy Buffett's Concert

On Thursday, July 17th, I had the opportunity to go to Jimmy Buffett’s concert at Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since I am from Costa Rica, I have never heard his music before, but even though I didn’t know any of the songs, I was able to enjoy every single moment of the concert. The music is very contagious and you can’t help but to dance to the beat of every song.

Also, it is very funny to see people dress up in Hawaiian skirts and Caribbean outfits, throwing beach balls in the air from one side of the audience to the other, drinking, and having a very good time… I thought it was neat that there were people of all ages enjoying this event. Now I understand why thousands of people in Cincinnati wait anxiously every year for this concert; it is definitely worth the time.

I got your picture!

One of my responsibilities at work is to receive the pictures that our customers want to use on their personalized wrappers. Even though the process of receiving and saving every photograph is the same, this task never becomes boring because every picture tells you a different story.

The most popular pictures during this time of the year are for First Communion, Graduation, and Weddings.  It is wonderful to see the proud and happy expressions on the faces of people who are celebrating such important moments in their lives. Some of the best pictures are the newborn babies; they always give me a smile because they are full of tenderness. On a few occasions, I have received images of pets whose owners wanted them to be used on wrappers for occasions such as Halloween, Birthday Parties and Christmas…definitely something different!  And the truth is that every single picture is great.

However, I must say that my favorites are the Anniversary wrappers. These pictures are proof of a life full of love; and it is wonderful to see the faces of two people who 25 or 50 years ago started a life together, and are still living happily next to each other after such a long time.
