In early September, 2008, Melissa K. of Webster, Texas
ordered personalized candy bars for her son's wedding in October. The
order was shipped on schedule for delivery September 12th. On September
11th, Melissa sent an e-mail to us. As Hurricane Ike
spun its fury across the gulf, coastal towns were evacuated. Webster
was one of them. Melissa did not know how long they would be evacuated
and was concerned about delivery of her son's wedding bars.
About this same time, we received notification from UPS
that the delivery center holding her package was closed until further
notice due to the pending hurricane. As could be imagined, on top of
the possible sheer disastrous effects
of the storm, on a personal level there were concerns of damage,
melting or loss of these candy bars. There was nothing we could do but
wait, literally, until it all blew over.
Ike would have its way with the coast of Texas...and beyond, cutting
a swath up the center of the country, losing water but regaining wind,
hitting us all the way up here in Cincinnati,
and on further north. In the meantime, Melissa was not sure when she
would be permitted to return home and UPS deliveries remained on hold
in certain areas. She submitted an address change to a different
location that was opened up again. By this time, it was a forgone
conclusion the frozen gel pack packed with the chocolate had long since
given up the ghost. I told Melissa that if and when her chocolates
reached her, to place the box unopened in the refrigerator for a few
hours before handling the bars. But behind the scenes, we were pretty
sure we'd end up sending a replacement order as we weren't sure they
would even be received.
A full week and a day after Ike stirred
things up, Melissa e-mailed us saying the chocolates had arrived at the
original address after all (we don't know what happened to the address
change!) and after a brief refrigeration the bars were perfect. Several
weeks later, much to our delight, we received the following e-mail:

I
just thought I would update you. Phillip (my son) and Jenny (my new
daughter in law) had the most remarkable wedding EVER on Saturday.
Everyone loved the chocolate bars.
The
place we held the wedding and reception was right on the water and it
was outdoors. During the hurricane, a beautiful sailboat had been
washed up next to the restaurant side of the terrace where the wedding
was held. They had some of their wedding photos taken by it. It added
such an interesting touch. Our venue was in such bad shape right after
the storm but those wonderful people worked long and hard and it was so
perfect. They had even replanted the gardens. We all had a great
conversation about the saga of the chocolate and it just added so much
to everything.
Thank you for everything."
